In March, 1871, Stanley arrived in Zanzibar to begin preparations for his search for Livingstone. Famed publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr. had agreed to fund the search, with dispatches of the adventure to be published in his paper, the New York Herald. In addition to his expedition to Livingstone, Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of Belgium, which enabled the occupation of the Congo Basin region, and for his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.
